Official figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that there has been a 4.9% increase in the number of divorces in England and Wales, with figures currently standing at 119,589 (2010) compared with 113,949 in 2009. This is the first rate rise in eight years.

Men and women in their early forties made up the highest percentage of divorcees, seventy percent of whom were annulling first marriages. The remainder comprised couples who had been either previously married or widowed.

Interestingly, two-thirds of decrees were granted to the wife with fact proven unreasonable behaviour in 55% of cases compared with 35% of claims by the husband. The ONS also revealed that one third of marriages in 1995 for example, were annulled within 15 years compared with one fifth in 1970.

The ONS commented that like the previous recession of the early 1990s and the last rate rise of 2003, the number of divorces increased significantly in the year following the recession rather than during it, attributable perhaps either to economic recovery and the subsequent increase in asset value or significant delay between separation and decree absolute.

Figures for Civil Partnership dissolution tell a similar story although this has been attributed to their relatively new status and therefore the sharper increase in those couples entering into a Civil Partnership, according to the ONS.
