Woman ordered to pay 150 000 to adopted son sent back to Russia

Woman ordered to pay $150,000 to adopted son sent back to Russia
Although the case did not take place in Colorado, readers in the area may be aware of the child who moved to the U.S. from Russia after he was adopted by an American family. The adoption has since resulted in a child support battle after the family sent the boy back to Russia. On Friday a court ordered the adoptive mother to pay $150,000 in child support.

According to the adoptive mother, she decided she no longer wanted the child after he developed what she called serious behavior problems. She claims that the boy hit, screamed, and spit at her. She also claims that he threatened to burn down the family\’s house and to kill members of the family, including his adoptive mom, her sister, and her mother.

Oddly, the woman never contacted the state Department of Children\’s Services to report the boy\’s behavior. She claims instead to have called several psychologists who were unable to meet with her for at least six weeks. At the urging of her mother, the woman put the boy on a plane by himself and sent him back to Russia with a note stating that she no longer wanted to be his mother because of his violent behavior.

According to Russian officials, the event caused psychological trauma to the boy, who spent six weeks in a psychiatric hospital upon his return to Russia. In addition, Russia delayed some U.S. adoptions following the incident. The adoptive mother has begun making payments toward the $150,000 she has been ordered to pay. She has also since given birth to a child.
